Black Power and Unity in 2018 Black Panther

All I have to say, is that I went in excited and exited wanting more!


Black Panther will be the top hit movie of 2018 for sure. Staring the handsome Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, and so many other fantastic actors and actresses who should win every award in the next Oscars, this movie was amazing. 

A part of the Marvel franchise, Black Panther is about a young prince named T’Challa who is made king of Wakanda, a high-tech supernatural kingdom hidden in Africa, after his father died. Conflict arises concerning a powerful plant that reveals a new threat to T’Challa’s throne and his rightful rule. 

Filled with physical and spiritual aspects such as breathtaking combat and culture-focused rituals, this movie brought a new light upon African culture and language, which should force every black person to reevaluate their purpose in life.

Whether it is to be successful in their trade or learn more about their ancestry and history, there is no way a person could leave the theater shrugging their shoulders saying nonchalantly, “Yeah it was a good movie.” I, in particular, walked out of the theater with my chin high and a bright smile on my face. To witness such black power and beauty in its own depth, perspective, and story-line was unconventionally intoxicating. 

Who would ever know such a well-developed theme about unity, strength, and authority could be represented in this manner. From the dialogue to the action-packed scenes to the costumes- no clothing of these Wakandians, this movie truly gave homage to all people of color. Despite the fact Black Panther is a fictional story with a mixture of modern day problems, this movie can be the open door needed for black people to unite as one again, just like during the Civil Rights Movement. Black-on-black crime need to stop. Black-on-others crime need to stop. We need to support black businesses and help our neighbors when they are in need. When we start respecting one another than it will make others shiver in their boots. Power is not given, but it is earned, not by the confirmation of others, but by the pride, respect, and love from within our own. Yeah, I thought of that one… 

This movie came out for a reason. I felt it when I first saw the previews- no the first time Marvel had Black Panther appear in Captain America: Civil War. There is nothing more intimidating yet beautiful to gaze upon then black people with power sitting on a throne and kicking behind at the same time.

So, if you haven’t seen this movie yet, please do so. You will not regret it. There is a lot of humor, action, awesome CGI and screen quality, and thought-felt dialogue that will give you shivers up your spine. Marvel has done a great job on this movie. For me to be a DC Comics fan, I must say I feel a bit of a pull to the other side. Maybe I can tread in the middle track of the two. *Evil Laugh.*

Either who, Chadwick Boseman, you are one blessed and highly favored man to play such a kingly role. You have one new fan! *Waves cheerfully.* I can go on all day about the amazing cast, but that would be another article in itself with a ton of spoilers. 

Black people, this is our time. God is cracking the door open an inch. First we must work within ourselves in order to push our way to the top. Remember, Power is not given, but it is earned, not by the confirmation of others, but by the pride, respect, and love from within our own.
