An Obstacle Every Christian Writer Face

Being a Christian, a believer in Jesus Christ, many people expect you to write only Christian stories. You may get the feeling that people would judge you based off what you write. Well, let me put your mind at ease. People – no matter who they are – WILL judge you based off what you write. And people do expect Christians to stay in their lane.

Ha you thought I was going to tell you otherwise!

But I want to encourage you today, if you are a Christian writer who enjoy writing in various genres, that it’s okay to write whatever you want. Your spiritual life is and should be personal between you and God. God knows your heart and who you are as a person. People do not have that godly privilege unless you allow them to affect you internally. So, take a moment of your day to pray and talk to Jesus about all of your struggles, especially about being a writer. Remember, King David was a writer too. He faced hundreds of struggles every day and he always sought God for guidance, wisdom, and strength.

Don’t forget to love what you do! God has blessed you with the gift of writing and a beautiful imagination. That is how he created mankind in the first place. To be in his image. Whatever you decide to write about, make sure it sits well with your soul. Not with anyone else’s because at the end of the day, you will have people who will like and dislike your work. That is totally normal.

Allow writing to be whatever you need it to be in your life. For me, writing is stress relief and a moment to escape this harsh reality we live in. I’ve been a Christian all my life and sometimes I do feel the pressure that I should only write stories about God or on a spiritual level. But I came to the realization that when we write in various genres as Christians, we tend to include strong messages within our work to evoke spiritual, societal, or moral change in our world. Writing is a way of communication and is free for everyone to try and to participate in.

So when you come face to face with this obstacle of pondering how people think and feel about your work as a Christian writer, I want you to pray about it. Keep writing what you enjoy and remember if you’re pleased with it, then God will be pleased too.

Are you a Christian writer? Do you face a similar obstacle sometimes? Please share your thoughts in the comments.

Thank you!
